Caminantes is made by one person, in Denmark, in the hours around a full-time job.

I walked the Camino de Santiago and ran into the same three problems everyone does. My phone had no signal exactly when I needed the map. The climbs never matched what I had been told to expect. And my battery was dead by mid-afternoon because everything I had installed assumed I was online.

I looked for an app that planned my own stages, worked with no signal and told me honestly what a day had cost me in distance and ascent. It did not exist, so I started building it. That took two years.

Then I did the only test that counts: I went back to Spain and walked the Camino again, using it every day. It held up. Around a hundred other pilgrims used it over those 23 days without me asking them to, which is how I knew it was worth finishing.

What I am trying to build

The core of Caminantes stays free. Planning your stages, tracking your walk and keeping the route offline are the parts that make the app worth carrying, and putting those behind a paywall would just mean fewer pilgrims have a working map on a bad day.

The place data is community-built. Pilgrims add albergues, fountains, churches and warnings as they walk, and every submission is reviewed before anyone else sees it. That is why the database gets better during walking season.
